Let’s face it…debt is a really big problem for many people, and debt can become a chain around a person’s neck. In essence, people become slaves to their debt holders. Many things can get in the way of service to God, and debt is just one of them, but debt is a big one that affects many people. We hear people all the time saying that they would love to go on a mission trip or give money to their church, but they can’t because of debt. We believe it is every believer’s responsibility to get out of debt and rid themselves of the burden debt creates so that they can better serve God. We believe that you can get out of debt while still giving your tithe to your church. “Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops.” Proverbs 3:9
We don’t believe bankruptcy is an option. While the courts can tell your creditors not to pursue your debts, we believe you still owe them. If you agreed to pay your debt when you signed up, you still need to pay it.
Other than declaring bankruptcy, what can you do? Simply, you must decrease your expenses, increase your income, or do both. You can do many things to decrease your expenses. You just need to decide what is required in your life and what is a comfort. You can do without many of the things we take for granted, such as nice furniture, new cars, cable television, etc.
You can bring in more money by taking a second job. Even with the economy in its current state, opportunities abound. You could take a second job during evenings and weekends, or you could explore the online opportunities available today. Be careful with the online jobs. There are a lot of scams. We recommend you go through a course dealing with debt elimination. A few months ago, we attended a “Conquering Debt God’s Way” seminar at our church by Bruce Ammons. We have also read a lot of Dave Ramsey’s information. While both of them are good, we heartily recommend Bruce Ammons’ materials.
